| What is the Green Card Lottery?
The DV-Program (Diversity Visa Program) also known as the Green Card Lottery is held annually by the Department of State and conducted under the terms of Section 203(c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). Section 131 of the Immigration Act of 1990 (Pub. L. 101-649) amended INA 203 to provide for a new class of immigrants known as "diversity immigrants" (DV immigrants). The DV-Program, better known as the “Green Card Lottery” makes 50,000 permanent resident visas (Green Cards) available each year. This type of visa is only available to people, whose countries have not sent more than 50,000 immigrants in the past 5 years. Applicants, who meet the eligibility requirements, are randomly chosen by a computer generated lottery drawing.
